Harpo Gooneratne

Harpo Gooneratne is a prominent figure in Sri Lanka’s hospitality and entertainment industry, known for his innovation and passion. He began his journey at St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, and later studied at a local hotel school, which laid the groundwork for his future ventures. In 2005, Harpo founded Harpo’s Cafes and Restaurants, starting with The Commons Coffee House and The Bayleaf, an acclaimed Italian restaurant in Colombo. His entrepreneurial spirit continued to shine with the launch of Harpo’s Pizza in 2007, which became Sri Lanka’s first homegrown wood-fired pizza brand, known for its innovative offerings like the only 22-inch square pizza. Followed by Harpo’s Colombo Fort café in 2011 at the heritage Dutch Hospital Complex in the city. He also pioneered Sri Lanka’s first wood-fired pizza roaming truck and ventured into retail with homemade pasta packs and sauces.
Most recent venture is the cocktail bar and restaurant SHOULDERS presenting Greek-inspired cuisine and crafted cocktails at the Havelock City Mall in Colombo .
His contributions have not only shaped the culinary landscape in Sri Lanka but have also extended internationally with the launch of Salone Ceylon in Bangalore, India, in 2023 and expansion of The Commons brand in Maldives in 2024.
With his contribution to the restaurant industry he was elected as the first President of the Colombo City Restaurant Collective from 2019 – 2023, with a membership representing over 60 city restaurants. Also has received many accolades including Outstanding Role Model of the Year in 2021 by Sri Lanka Unites representing Sri Lanka’s youth from all ethnic and religious groups.
